Rose's recruitment is part of a strategy by McDermott to build up a substantial pan-European competition practice capitalising on what the firm already has in the UK and Germany. McDermott European head of competition Scott Megregian said he will now turn his attention to establishing a Brussels presence.
Rose was the only competition partner at Watson Farley, but ran a small team of assistants who sat within the corporate department. International head of corporate Jan Mellman told The Lawyer that the firm had not yet decided whether to replace him with an internal promotion or a lateral hire.
Watson Farley can theoretically put Rose on gardening leave until mid-September, but Megregian is trying to secure an earlier release for him.
Megregian said that Rose, like the rest of the McDermott competition team, will handle a combination of contentious and merger control work.
Rose will bring his standalone competition practice with him from Watson Farley, including clients from the telecoms and energy sectors. However, he expects his shipping clients to stick with Watson Farley.
