Mayer Brown has boosted its City asset finance offering with the hire of former Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe Europe managing partner Stuart McAlpine
McAlpine focuses on cross-border asset and project finance transactions, particularly in the shipping, offshore and energy sectors.
The news comes after the departures of finance partners Lee Cullinane and Jacqueline Evans, who joined the firm from Clifford Chance and Allen & Overy respectively in 2009. The pair left to join White & Case’s London office in December (15 December 2010).
London banking and finance chief Dominic Griffiths, said: “In Asia, Mayer Brown JSM has one of the leading aviation and shipping finance practices in the region and we also have strong practices in France and Germany - Stuart’s the right person to build a strong presence in the London asset finance market and develop our global practice.”
At Orrick, McAlpine had spells in the firm’s Singapore, London and Paris offices. He was the firm’s Europe managing partner between 2008 and 2009.

In Asia, they charge $30-40k for ship loans and about $60k for ship leases. The UK market is dominated by low priced firms such as Dentons and Watson Farley.
The MC is cutting back in this area for this reason, so it's probably not really a growth area right now.
