  • Oh dear another high profile partner leaving Mayer Brown. They’re showing the symptoms of an endangered firm. What happened to the promise of new partners pitching up? I fear for their brand image it has been a abominable year for them: Management breakdown, Joseph Collins, Paul Maher, and the following shockwaves, the jealousy some supposedly professional partners are portraying, other partners leaving, the failure of the Heller deal and now this another high profile loss. What is going on? The firm must get its act together and learn that if it continues to conduct itself in a consistently piteous way its business will falter at a stratospheric rate, which is already beginning to happen.

  • I agree the firm is in dyer need of streamlining its PR. It’s a shame because the firm was presented with tremendous opportunity when it was approached by Mayer Brown & Platt some years ago now.

  • It will be very interesting when the firm’s financial figures are published; I suspect Revenue in London will have dropped significantly in relation to its city competitors. With the loss of market leading lawyers comes the loss of business especially when replacements are not sought.

  • Paul - is that you again?

  • Supposedly bright intelligent Mayer Brown London partners should not spend all day blogging on a news article. However I suppose work is sparse for them at the moment so I guess it's understandable. The comment above comes from the exact capricious Mayer Brown London corporate partner being spoken off. I have a message for you folk; Paul Maher fostered you for years promoting several of you to your respected positions, be honest and ask yourselves if repaying him in this way is just.

  • How's your rapidly diminishing corporate department progressing?
    Regards,

    The Paul Maher PR machine.

P.S, Names will be mentioned from your side seeing that you have your heart set on destroying Paul's reputation.

  • Ooh this is getting feisty. I want these supposedly cowardly Mayer Brown partners to reveal their identity and eloquently put their points across to this forum. Come on already let's get things out in the open.

  • As an insider reading these comments I can tell you that the majority of what is being said against Mayer Brown is true. This fact is a sad truth for a firm that had so much potential however I genuinely believe that their brand image is now beyond the point of revival.

  • A high profile departure indeed. This one will really hurt Mayer Brown. As with all these things, those who can go will, and those who can't won't.

  • A serious loss. Since Murphy's departure all the assistants but one junior have resigned.

  • That's Mayer Brown through and through. All grey hair and no vision. Those with a desire to build get frustrated and move on. What does that say for the future of the firm.

  • Mayer Brown have driven them into a vicious circle. This was initially caused by the departure of none other than Paul Maher. Whilst there were certain high ranking capricious partners stationed at the firm who wanted him out for selfish reasons; there are many others who are great supporters of him. These partners like Francis, Kate and Fiona who have already left (just to mention a few high profile departures) have unquestioned loyalty. There are many other partners that will also leave immanently fuelled by the same motive; that I can state with certainty and the firm knows it.
However the situation has worsened for the firm, now many of their lawyers are not just disgusted by the departure of Paul but are also mourning other resignations. This in itself will cause more to leave like the associates that resigned this week to follow Francis at Jones Day. The loss of Paul Maher, Cate Sharp, Fiona Adams and their associates along with Francis and hers will result in a financially weaker Mayer Brown London office. Will the entire practice crumble? I feel for the offices senior partner as he needs to get control quick. The problems are mounting at Mayer Brown, London is in a critical state, and the office needs attention quick. Run, run ... run for the hills.

  • Murphy built a great group of enterprising team players. Hardly any surprise then that they have all resigned. I wonder where we will see them surface!

  • Who is spreading this stuff? It's hooey.

For example, Gillian Sproul is NOT in her "mid fifties". Take a look at her picture. Take a look at her predecessor's picture. Who is older? Pretty obvious, isn't it?

So why is someone trying to make out that Sproul is older than she is and that age is a significant factor here? And WHY?

Can I be forgiven for saying that after all the efforts to fight age discrimination in the legal profession, this nasty stuff is beneath contempt.

As a client, I have instructed Sproul in the past and will do so in the future. Not because she is older or younger but because she is a very, very good competition lawyer and any department she runs will likely be a very, very good competition department.

  • Stop diverting away from the underlying point being made on this forum. What is being said is that Mayer Brown will be weaker having lost some of there most energetic lawyers in Francis and Paul.
