Mayer Brown has bagged a senior official from the European Commission's competition arm, the second firm to tap the Commission in the space of a week.
Andres Font Galarza, who worked in the Commission's directorate general for competition, has joined the antitrust and competition practice in the firm's Brussels office. Last week, Clifford Chance announced that the former head of the Commission's legal service Michel Petite has joined its Paris office (www.thelawyer.com, 10 January).
Kiran Desai, a partner in Mayer Brown's Brussels office said: "Andres Galarza's insights, technical ability and outstanding reputation in the antitrust community will enable him to effectively assist clients in steering their cases through the EU and other international and national jurisdictions."
At Mayer Brown Galarza will focus on mergers, joint ventures and cartels. As deputy head of the competition unit he was responsible for enforcing EC law governing competition in the consumer goods, construction, foodstuffs and medical products and biotechnology sectors.
