Martineau launches in Brussels as it ramps up energy focus

Martineau senior partner Andrew Whitehead is to launch the firm in Brussels after signing a strategic collaboration with German law firm, Becker Büttner Held (BBH).

Whitehead, who currently heads the firm’s energy practice, will transfer to Brussels along with partners Peter Manford, who heads the firm’s commerce group and James Dilley, who leads the competition and procurement team.

Energy and infrastructure firm BBH launched an office in Brussels in January on the back of the hire of Dr. Dörte Fouquet from German firm Kuhbier.

Whitehead said: “The European energy market is evolving rapidly across Europe, with developments underway which will see greater interconnection between the UK and mainland Europe, both in physical terms as new interconnectors get built but also as trading platforms integrate and consolidate.

“The pace of change is increasing, and we need to be at the centre of things to engage with the policy makers and help our clients understand what changes are planned.”

The firm has moved to strengthen relationships with BBH by sending a lawyer to its German offices while BBH has sent a lawyer to its Birmingham office.

Martineau counts energy suppliers NPower and EdF, as well as European power exchange operator APX among its clients.
