Patent and trade mark attorney firm Marks & Clerk has launched an office in Shanghai, becoming one of the first UK IP agencies to open on the Chinese mainland.
The firm has set up a three-person representative office to act as a meeting point for Marks & Clerk attorneys and Chinese IP clients.
Keith Hodkinson, head of the Marks & Clerk China practice in the UK, said: “The office essentially acts as a liaison point for Chinese clients and provides us with more infrastructure.”
Marks & Clerk has developed a practice managing the patent portfolios for Chinese companies in Europe, and advises telecoms giant Huawei in this capacity.
Hodkinson said: “It reflects the fact that Marks & Clerk is becoming a strategic IP adviser not just a patent prosecutor.”
The firm has plans to grow the office and is currently training Chinese lawyers in the UK with the aim of employing them in Shanghai.
