Watson is another to follow the traditional route from trolley pusher in 1974 to senior clerk today, but has stayed put at Fountain Court for the duration of his career. The team now totals nine clerks, but the set recently saw the departure of chambers director Ric Martin after three years in office. "Chambers gave it a go but the bar are very demanding, and it didn't work out as fully as expected," says Watson. Traditionally noted for its banking expertise, Fountain Court has not made the recent high-profile signings of some of its peers. It continues to be regarded as a magic circle set, but the question of whether it is currently failing to fulfil its potential is arguable. The opportunity is there now for Watson to move the set forward in order to retain its privileged position.
