What's less well known is the fact that the poor City giant had to deal with representatives of the great unwashed battering on its door attempting to do their own due diligence on the offer documents. Not only was the lawyer acting for footballers, he was from an American firm!
A Weil Gotshal & Manges associate turned up on the day the offer document went out demanding access to the file. A&O refused. So the Weil chap got on the phone to the Takeover Panel, where assistant secretary Robert Adam immediately told A&O to let him in. Sadly, for Manc fans, to no avail.
