  • Posh southerners pull out of merger with northern oiks. Is anyone really surprised?

  • I'm not surprised.
What both these firms have suffered from is over ambitious growth plans. They could both do with a saviour,
Halliwells must be champing at the bit to get into Manches. Helen Ward alone would do wonders for their profitability.

  • I'm not sure that there are many bits of Halliwells worth salvaging. They have a handful of talented equity partners. And, of course, they have that hideously expensive lease that is threatening everything. Rumour has it that a very similar Spinningfields office is now being considered by another large firm for around half of what Halliwells are paying, so it is difficult to see what their survival strategy might be.
And does anyone dare reveal the details of the latest Halliwells-related chuckle going around Manchester...would anyone care to provide the latest Partner:Assistant ratio in the Corporate team? Go on, and provide absolute numbers too for our maximum amusement.

  • Shame - I was looking forward to the emergence of the behemoth known as "Manwells" which would surely have taken over the world.

  • This story gave me images of an octagenerian teetotal spinster and a 20 year old lager lout stumbling round the dance floor at 2am trying to get together

  • What about a threesome for Halliwells, DWF & Cobbetts.

    You heard it here first

  • Is there any firm left that Halliwells hasn't desperately tried to merge with?

  • Desperately hawking for a merger. Halliwells you say?

Sorry I must have the wrong end of the stick.

It seems like a nuts move, unless Manches have sufficient ultra-rich private clients. I could see Manches having some interest in catching the Alderly Edge brigade, but a bit of a ropey tie-up.

And what a surprise that the highly profitable and successful family dept is putting the brakes on something that might improve the prospects of the corporate side at Manches. Is it time to split Manches into the two businesses it has seemed to be for a while?

  • This is just something which hasn't worked out. That happens in life. Why all the sniping?
