Leading Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques has appointed a new chairperson from inside the firm, while its key corporate partner John Atkin has moved on to become the managing partner of rival Blake Dawson Waldron.
Robyn Chalmers, who has been a partner at Mallesons since 1984, will succeed David Hoare who has served for six years and is now taking retirement. Chalmers currently works in the firm's dispute resolution practice and will continue to spend around 70 per cent of her time in this role.

At Blake Dawson Waldron, Atkin will replace former managing partner John Colvin, who has been on gardening leave for several months and has now retired. At Mallesons, Atkin has worked on several major transactions during the past two years, including the BHP/OneSteel demerger, the demutualisation of NRMA Insurance and the privatisation of Telestra. Blake Dawson's chairman Richard Fisher said: "Atkin has a strong track record in building corporate client relationships, having been closely associated as a lawyer with some of Australia's largest corporations."
