You are surely wrong to label the ill-health defence the "Pinochet defence" (27 March). It has been in use with some success by defendants for many years before the good general came along. One defendant who springs to mind is Ernest Saunders, although his case may be distinguished on the grounds that it was used to avoid a prison sentence.
I would suggest it should be more appropriately called the Judge Richard Gee defence.
