A court-monitoring network has been set up in Macedonia by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to promote judicial reform.
The OSCE has persuaded 18 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to join its 'All for Fair Trials' group. By watching domestic hearings of all kinds it aims to restore public confidence in the legal system and help ensure the right to a fair trial. It also seeks to highlight where the country's judiciary requires reform.
The Transparency Macedonia group, the Macedonian Bar Association and the OSCE mission in Skopje have trained 108 lawyers, law students, and legally experienced human rights activists for the project.
A final report will be published in September 2004, and key findings and recommendations will be discussed with the Macedonian authorities in late 2004.
