Lovells has appointed partner Pieter Van Tol as its New York office managing partner.
The reinsurance and disputes partner took up his post yesterday (Tuesday, 20 January), replacing former New York head David Alberts.
Van Tol joined the firm from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in 2003. He has since helped developed Lovells’ reinsurance practice in the US. He will continue to practise while managing the New York office.
Van Tol said: “Dave has done a fantastic job and I will be hoping to continue along the same path. The economy is very challenging but we have succeeded in building up in our core areas in the US; IP, litigation, bankruptcy and disputes. We hope to be able to maintain this.”
Lovells reported healthy half-year global financial results in 2008, revealing a 15 per cent hike in turnover in November from £225m up £260m (6 Nov 2008).
At the time the firm’s managing partner, David Harris highlighted the countercyclical nature of Lovells’ practice as a contributing factor to its strong performance, in particular in corporate, bankruptcy and restructuring.
