Lovells’ planning team has successfully negotiated an agreement that paves the way for the construction of one of the tallest residential developments in Europe.
Head of planning Michael Gallimore and associate Claire Dutch worked with existing client Ballymore Properties to secure planning permission for the interlinked towers at Millharbour in London’s Docklands.
The two towers will be 40 and 48 storeys high and will house 790 residential apartments. A commercial centre will join the towers, which will include restaurants, shops and a health spa.
In order to gain planning permission, Lovells negotiated a ‘Section 106’ agreement with the borough of Tower Hamlets. This ensures that, in return for being allowed to go ahead with the development, Ballymore commits to a number of benefits for the local community.
These include promising to use local labour in the development and agreeing to provide affordable housing in order to push on the regeneration of the Docklands’ Millennium Quarter.
Gallimore said: “Because of the scale and the size of the development, it was quite a long process agreeing that with the council’s lawyers.”
