Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has made its third round of global counsel promotions this year, with London picking up just one of the 11 promotions.
The firm’s German offices accounted for almost half of the promotions, with Paris taking one new counsel and Italy and Spain two apiece. Of the practice areas, finance benefited the most with three promotions.
The firm has now made up a total of 25 counsel since formalising the position two years ago. In two rounds earlier this year 14 associates were promoted, with a total of four based in London and the rest in Asia and Europe.
Freshfields joint senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer said there was no strategic reason behind the majority of counsel promotions being made outside London, but acknowledged that cultural differences between the Continental offices and London’s could account for the popularity of the position outside the City.
