This year's QC appointments in the North West have increased by more than a third, with seven barristers taking silk compared with last year's four
Manchester sees four new silks, split between four different sets: Peter Main at Deans Court Chambers, Conor Quigley at 8 King Street, David Manley at Kings Chambers (formerly 40 King Street) and door tenant Timothy Lyons at St James's Chambers (also with 24 Old Buildings in London).
Last year there were only three new silks in the city, with two of them in the same set, 28 St John Street (now St John's Buildings).
The other three appointments in the North West are both at the other end of the M62. Liverpool's 7 Harrington Street is the only set in the region to have two members taking silk - Neil Flewitt, a specialist in fraud and consumer protection, and Andrew Menary, whose practice covers personal injury and crime. It was Menary's first application.
The mixed common law set was formed in 1999 from a merger between two of Liverpool's leading chambers, Corn Exchange and Martins Buildings. Headed by David Steer QC and Ian Goldrein QC, it currently has more than 70 tenants.
In January 2003, Stuart Lawson-Rogers QC and Jonathan Durham-Hall QC joined the chambers as associate members, and Julian Nutter, formerly of St John's Chambers in Manchester, joined the criminal team. Elizabeth Brennan, formerly of Liverpool set 14 Cook Street, also joined the family and criminal teams.
"We're absolutely delighted. We're the only chambers in Liverpool to ever have two new silks in one year, apart from the old Corn Exchange set, which is one of the constituent parts of this chambers," said John Kilgallon, practice manager at 7 Harrington Street.
The third new silk in Liverpool is John McDermott at Chavasse Court.
