Litigation Writs 17/2/98

The family of a Wigan man who died after being given blood products in hospital which his relatives claim were contaminated, are suing Merseyside-based St Helens and Knowsley Health Authority and Mersey Regional Health Authority of Liverpool. The writ issued by Ada Thomas, a relative and the personal representative of the late Alfred Thomas says he died after developing hepatitis. It alleges he contracted hepatitis as a result of blood products received at Whiston Hospital between September and October 1984.

Solicitors Jeffrey Green Russell are being sued for damages over allegedly negligent advice. Lottery King Holdings, Lottery King International, and Lottery King have issued a writ claiming damages from them for alleged breach of contract and negligence in their advise regarding the lawfulness of certain Scratch and Match cards.

Tie Rack is suing Shopping Centres, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, for a declaration that, on a true construction of lease of shop unit 15a, Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, Southwark, London SE16, the refusal of Shopping Centres to grant a licence to assign the lease to Carphone Warehouse and to consent to a change of user was unreasonable. It is asking the court for declaration that despite the refusal it is, without any licence from Shopping Centres, entitled to assign the lease to Carphone Warehouse.

Summons issued by Freemans, London W1.

Maes Finance and MAC No 1, of Baker Street, London, are suing JJ Goldstein & Co of London NW4, for damages for alleged negligence, breach of contract and retainer, deceit and misrepresentation in respect of an advance secured on basement flat and vaults at 18 and 20 Sloane Gardens, Chelsea, London.

In the writs column in The Lawyer 3 February, we referred to a writ issued by Abbey National "against 14 individuals formally trading as Blythe Liggins & Co". Blythe Liggins has asked us to point out that the firm is still trading and that a Notice of Discontinuance was lodged with the court on 13 January 1998. We are happy to put the record straight.
