Top holiday company Thomson Tour Operations is being sued by a young couple whose 1993 holiday in Torremolinos, Spain, ended in terror when fire broke out at their hotel. Keith and Toni Austin, from Romford, Essex, risked their lives in a bid to alert other hotel residents after fire alarms failed to work. But the writ says the effect of what happened has been devastating on Toni Austin. She has lost her job with a firm of solicitors, has lost confidence, suffers panic attacks and anxiety and is a shadow of her former self.

Croydon policewoman Kathryn Routier, 31, has issued a High Court writ claiming damages from Leonard Sprague, of Oxhey, Watford, over road crash injuries when her Escort was involved in a crash with his Cavalier on the night of 19 February 1992. Routier, 31, has been unable to return to full duties as a police officer and may lose her job according to the writ.

A man of Didben Purlieu, Hampshire, blamed for a collision between two boats in the Solent last August faces a High Court compensation claim. Paul Bedwell is being sued by Lucan Kane, of Bromley, Kent. Kane was injured when his vessel, Skyros, was in collision with Bedwell's, Hitch-Hiker, on 13 August 1995. The writ blames the collision, and Kane's injuries, on alleged negligence by Bedwell.

A Colchester teacher who was badly injured in a 1993 road accident in Bishops Stortford is suing the driver he blames for the crash. Motorcyclist, Martin Dorey, 41, suffered a fractured sternum, concussion and post traumatic amnesia as a result of the accident. While in hospital afterwards he also suffered a stroke which has left him severely mentally and physically disabled. The writ is against Michelle Miley-Swan, of Bishops Stortford.

Maidstone Borough Council has issued a High Court writ against Raymond Clifford, of Boxley, Kent, seeking injunctions restraining him from using land adjacent to Marylands for motor sports, for storing and breaking vehicles, parts and scrap.
