Wakefield City Council has issued a High Court writ against Gordon Eccles, of Kinsley, Wakefield in a bid to ban him from holding markets within six miles of markets run by the City Council at Hems-worth and South Elmsall.

A 74-year-old Solihull man who claims he was coerced into giving around £150,000 and making over a half share in his home to a woman friend is now taking her to the High Court to get the money back. Douglas Porter took the money out of his bank accounts and gave it to Patricia Cooper, of 20 Woodbury Grove, Hillfield, Solihull, between January and June this year, according to his writ. It says he also gave her a half share in his house in Solihull, and that she has threatened to dispose of the money.

Barbara Klempa, of London W10, has issued a writ against Andrew McCluskey and Paul Humphrey of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. She alleges she inspired the group's name and some of its songs and is claiming £5 million damages.

Pop musician Matthew Seligman is suing the Musicians Union for damages for breach of contract over records he has made since 1979. Seligman claims he is owed money for performance royalties since 1979. His writ says his music has been broadcast commercially on radio and television in the UK and internationally, and that while the Musicians Union negotiated payment for the performances they did not disclose this to him until some time within the last year.

Sandra Belchamber, of 16 Chevening House, Chipperfield Road, St Paul's Cray, Orpington, accuses Bexley Health Authority of negligence. Her writ says she was admitted to Queen Mary's Hospital on 21 July 1992 for a laparoscopy, which was abandoned, but that during the course of the operation she received an injury to the small bowel which led to peritonitis and septicaemia which was not promptly diagnosed. She claims that because of the injury and the failure to diagnose it she needed intensive treatment and underwent numerous further operations.
