Lords to hear custody fight
A mother has been given leave to take her custody fight to the House of Lords. The woman gave birth to her daughter in 1992 in the Republic of Ireland and separated from the father in 1995. In 1996 a custody order was issued in the mother's favour. After the mother moved to England with her daughter in 1998, the father applied to the London High Court Family Division to have his daughter returned under the provisions of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. In August this year his request was refused, but in November that decision was overturned by the Appeal Court which ordered that the child be returned to Ireland. Lords Steyn, Nicholls and Hope have given leave for the mother to challenge that ruling.
