White v Metropolitan Police - QBD 15 July 1996

Claimant: John White, 27

Incident: Injury occurred during police raid on London pub

Injuries: Claimant suffered broken arm and psychological problems following the incident in which he claimed he was assaulted by police during the raid; he claims he has lost earnings in his work as a graphic designer as a result of his injuries; he now works as an insurance salesman

Award: £47,127 in total; £27,500 awarded by a jury, the remainder awarded by the judge

Headford v Avon Health Authority - QBD 23 July 1996

Claimant: Alistair Headford, 32

Incident: Medical negligence

Injuries: Claimant admitted as emergency to Bristol's Royal Hospital for Sick Children in October 1963; operation carried out to remove cyst which was blocking his bladder; due to "anaesthetic accident", he was starved of oxygen and suffered cardiac arrest on operating table and left severely brain damaged and dependent on the care of others; now confined to a wheelchair and incapable of managing his own affairs

Award: £1,275,000 (agreed damages)
