Litigation deals round-up

Davies Arnold Cooper (John Smith) negotiated a £250,000 no-liability settlement on behalf of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Kevin Muscat for an alleged bad tackle on former Charlton Athletic Midfielder Matt Holmes. Holmes alleged the 1998 tackle ended his football career. DAC instructed Richard Davies QC (Essex Street Chambers). Collyer Bristow (Andrew Irvine) advised Holmes, instructing Michael McParland (4 Essex Court).

Finers Stephens Innocent (Archana Hogarth) advised Trenport Investments in a planning inquiry appeal before the Secretary of State. The inquiry related to Trenport’s development of 2,500 units in Kent. Finers instructed Timothy Corner QC (4-5 Gray’s Inn Square) to appear at the 11-week inquiry. Bill Hicks QC (Landmark Chambers), instructed by Herbert Smith, represented developer Rouse Kent, while Lawrence Graham advised the Secretary of State for Health, instructing Matthew Horton QC (2 Mitre Court Buildings).

Versailles, in fraud proceedings being heard in Southwark Crown Court. Herbert Smith (Joel Smith) is being instructed by home entertainment distributors and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) in an initiative to protect rental rights in DVDs and videos distributed in the UK. The Rental Rights Protection Programme will involve monitoring rental outlets to ensure compliance with copyright law. FACT is commencing proceedings against dealers found to be in violation. Distributors funding the initiative are Warner Home Video UK, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment UK, Universal Pictures UK, Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
