Linklaters has introduced a new global management level as it restructures ahead of Simon Davies's era as managing partner.
The magic circle firm last Tuesday (1 May) introduced a new status between managing associate and partner, known as global counsel, and the firm has made up a colossal 29 managing associates and two managing professional support lawyers to the post in 12 different jurisdictions.
Linklaters director of HR Jill King said: "We want to recognise where lawyers have become strong specialists, and also those who work in the emerging markets, to grow practices where there's no business partner but a senior lawyer's needed."
Linklaters previously used consultants and counsel on a regional ad hoc basis. The firm felt these roles needed to be harmonised under the single name of counsel and applied across the firm globally.
King explained that the new status has been brought in to ensure "global consistency", which led to firmwide criteria being drawn up. Counsel can still be appointed to the partnership, but it is not a prerequisite to becoming a partner.
