Linklaters & Alliance has appointed Christopher Style as its new head of litigation.Style will replace Brinsley Nicholson who is stepping down after seven years in the post.Style has pledged to increase cross-border litigation by 50 per cent over the next three years as part of a plan to increase the firm's use of the department.Cross-border work currently accounts for over half of Linklaters income from litigation work. One of Style's first acts was to announce the launch of an international arbitration practice, which will be led by Style and Sigvard Jarvin in Paris.London-based partner Greg Reid is going to Paris to help develop the group.Style also intends to make sure that the firm's litigation service is used by more of Linlaters' clients. For example he wants accountancy clients to use the main firm for all professional negligence litigation. He also pledges to expand the "new school litigation" practice by increasing the number of trained advocates and extending the range of fixed fee work that the department is able to offer.Style strongly rejects recent reports that Linklaters is looking to restructure its litigation department to increase profitability."Our profitability is up a third on the first half of last year and is the best half year that we have ever had," he says."We are not as large as I would like us to be. I am determined to grow the business and I am sure that we will."Style hints that he will be making lateral hires in the near future as well as welcoming 10 junior lawyers in January.
