Lend Lease promotes senior legal counsel Packer to EMEA GC

Australian-headquartered construction giant Lend Lease has promoted senior legal counsel Mark Packer to the role of general counsel (GC) for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Packer took up the role earlier this month following the retirement of former EMEA GC Patrick Gloyens.

Packer went in-house at Lend Lease in 2009 after five years as a partner at Eversheds. Prior to that he worked at both Norton Rose as an assistant (17 September 1996) and Dechert, where he was a partner (8 December 2003).

He recently led on Lend Lease’s £696m sale of its 30 per cent stake in Bluewater shopping centre to Land Securities Group and is currently working on the  £1.3bn International Quarter development at Stratford City.

Gloyens is not thought to have moved into a subsequent full-time position after Lend Lease. Sources suggest he is intending to take on project work on as a contractor.

It is just over a year since Gloyen’s predecessor, Alistair Cutts, left at the same time as the business undertook cuts to scale back its European arm (13 May 2013).

Lend Lease’s group general counsel is former Brookfield Multiplex GC Karen Pederson. She stepped into the top job at Lend Lease after the departure of William Hara at the end of 2012.

Lend Lease reviewed its panel earlier this year with a tender instruction for preferred providers to reduce their rates.

The revamped panel now includes DAC Beachcroft, DLA Piper, Eversheds, Herbert Smith Freehills, Linklaters, Nabarro and Pinsent Masons.

The company also instructs off-panel firms for specialist work.
