Singapore's Economic Review Committee (ERC) has published a report aimed at transforming Singapore into Asia's 'premier legal services hub', thereby attracting foreign lawyers to the region
The Legal Services Working Group (LWG) of the ERC made recommendations to recognise foreign law degrees for entry to the local bar, as well as tax incentives and changes in the legal education system. It also urged the promotion of Singapore as a regional alternative dispute resolution centre and a regional intellectual property hub. Fiscal incentives are proposed as a way to encourage companies to relocate their operational or overseas heads to Singapore. The LWG also suggested that Singapore lawyers develop expertise in life and bio-sciences, IT and media,-commerce and various aspects of international trade law.
