Legal executives will be allowed to appear in a range of new courts, after being granted extended rights of audience by the Lord Chancellor.
The Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) president, John Wells, announced that the Lord Chancellor has approved ILEX’s application for the extended rights yesterday.
The decision means that legal executives will now be able to appear in criminal proceedings in the magistrates and youth courts, and on bail applications in the crown court.
Their existing rights in family and civil proceedings will also be enhanced, to include their involvement in committal proceedings.
The decision will take effect at the end of this year, when parliamentary procedures for implementing the new qualification scheme are completed.
