LAWYERS IN THE LOTTERY FIASCO

National Lottery Commission: Advised by Treasury solicitors on constitutional matters, while Lawrence Graham advised on commercial issues and took responsibility for assessing the two bids.

After losing the High Court case over its treatment of Camelot's bid to retain control of the Lottery, the commission dumped its former Treasury solicitor advisers in favour of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Partners Richard Chalk and Jo Rickard led the Freshfields team and have instructed Gordon Pollock QC of Essex Court. Pollock replaces Jonathan Crow of 4 Stone Buildings, the senior junior who was the commission's previous counsel.



Camelot: Baker & McKenzie advised Camelot on its challenge to the commission's decision and on the procedure adopted by the commission after the judicial review. The team comprises partner David Fraser, senior associate Tom Cassels and assistants Richard Pike and David Green. Baker & McKenzie instructed David Pannick QC and Tom de la Mare of Blackstone Chambers.

Camelot group legal adviser Andrew Osborne instructed CMS Cameron McKenna to advise on the bid. Camerons also worked with the in-house team on the acquisition of GTech's UK company.

Both Camerons and Baker & McKenzie are on Camelot's panel.



GTech (Camelot's technical partner): Advised by Clifford Chance on corporate and litigious matters. Litigation partner Michael Smyth, assisted by Joanna Ludlam, acted for GTech in the High Court and instructed Nigel Pleming QC and Alison Foster of 39 Essex Street.

Commercial partner Elizabeth Hiester acted for GTech on Camelot's acquisition of the UK company.
