Madonna's latest, and possibly last ever (one can hope), UK tour is certainly the hottest ticket in town. But guess which law firm is treating its clients to see the queen of pop. No, not one of the trendy media outfits like Olswang or Harbottle & Lewis. It's Slaughter and May.
Tulkinghorn had no idea of the firm's love of all things pop until Michael Pescod turned up on dress-down day wearing fingerless gloves, a ripped denim jacket and a kilt. Tulkinghon can't wait for the firm's Christmas panto, where Pescod, Nigel Boardman and Tim Clark will perform a special version of Like a Virgin. However, Tulkinghorn wonders which client will be billed for the 24 hours spent on hold to the ticket line by the downtrodden trainee given the task of getting those tickets. Apparently, said trainee won the honour of this task (or rather, a day's exemption from photocopying duties) by being the first member of the corporate group to learn the words to Material Girl (learning the lyrics to this popular 'music' classic has long been part of Slaughters' in-house training programme – Andy Ryde is understood to be a former winner). Here's just a snippet for your musical pleasure:
They can beg and they can plead but they can't see the light – that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash is always Mister Right,
'Cause we are living in a material world and I am a material girl,
You know that we are living in a material world and I am a material girl.
