WINNERS

• 1st - Mark Howard QC, Brick Court Chambers
For the last 12 months, Brick Court silk Mark Howard has been fixture in the commercial courts and has established a niche for himself as the man to call when financial arrangements go sour. He successfully defended Royal & Sun Alliance against an insurance case brought by General Motors and was the counsel to Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Barry O’Brien on his disciplinary tribunal following Philip Green’s failed takeover of Marks & Spencer. Howard has won a string of cases for high profile clients this year. He recorded a victory for British Energy against Ampere and Credit Suisse in the High Court in a dispute over the financing of the Eggborough power plant. A few weeks later Howard found himself in the Court of Appeal defending Goldman Sachs against IFE Fund in a battle over a loan. Inevitably he won. Consistency and class.

• 2nd - Clare Montgomery QC, Matrix Chambers
Clare Montgomery QC’s peers dub her as “the brightest of them all”, with the silk earning the admiration of law firms from the magic circle to white collar crime boutiques. The last year proves, once again, that Montgomery is at the top of her game being able to turn her had to both criminal and commercial work. She prosecuted the Metropolitan Police over the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and also appeared before the Commercial Court in the fraud action against the Liberal Democrat donor Michael Brown.

• 3rd - Stuart Catchpole QC
If you need a construction silk, the name Stuart Catchpole would not be far from anyone’s lips. His reputation has made him the first port of call for the likes of London Underground and Tube Lines in both complex litigation and arbitration. Catchpole is also considered a leading professional negligence barrister who is regarded by his peers as someone who “thinks outside the box to get the job done.” Not content with his leading status in professional negligence and construction, Catchpole has also been instructed on a series of multi million pound insurance cases, including representing Lloyd’s underwriters in claims arising out of the collapse of The Accident Group.
