Law Society hooks up to small firms' IT needs

THE Law Society has launched a joint initiative with UK computer company International Computers Limited (ICL) to provide low-cost technology to small and medium-sized firms.

Under the scheme - known as SolicIT - ICL will act as broker for firms buying leading name hardware, software, training and consultancy at below market prices.

The Law Society and ICL will also offer advice on legal software suppliers and have produced a booklet of recommended suppliers, available to firms within the M25 area. The rest of England and Wales will be targeted in January.

The society has set up an IT helpline on 0171 316 5516 and hopes to hold a series of seminars and workshops near London from September.

Law Society membership services director John Miller said a society survey had revealed many solicitors were "bewildered" by the range of services and products on offer.

SolicIT internal account manager Marvin Wilson said SolicIT hoped to give small firms the same bargaining power as large firms.
