The Law Society today condemned government proposals for a new mental health bill.
Chief executive Janet Paraskeva said that the bill does not help people suffering from mental health problems, instead concentrating on the perceived danger posed by those people.
The society also says that the bill’s definition of mental health is too broad, and that it could lead to a denial of human rights. As it stands, there is potential for epilepsy or even being drunk to be counted as mental disorders.
As part of the Mental Health Alliance, the Law Society believes care and treatment are the best ways to deal with mental illness.
