Freshfields arbitration star Paulsson retires from firm
Longstanding Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer co-arbitration chair Jan Paulsson has retired from the firm to focus on his career as an arbitrator and academic.

Paulsson is widely considered to be a leader in the field of international arbitration and is the current president of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration.
A Freshfields stalwart, Paulsson has led the firm’s international arbitration practice for more than 20 years and has helped develop arbitration centres around the world.
As president of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), in 2008 Paulsson committed to helping Dubai develop its own arbitration centre (18 February 2008).
He is a key adviser to the government of Bahrain and advised the jurisdiction on its land and maritime border dispute with Qatar, the longest case in the history of the International Court of Justice, which ended with a judgment on 16 March 2001 (26 April 1999).
Last year he joined with 20 Essex Street’s Daniel Bethlehem QC and Blackstone Chamber’s Jeffrey Jowell QC to advise the Bahrani government on proposed human rights reforms following the Arab Spring in 2011.
It is understood that while Paulsson has officially retired he will be retained by the magic circle firm for set-piece disputes.
