US firm Latham & Watkins is relocating one of its most senior Washington DC partners to its newly-acquired office in Frankfurt.
John Watson, who is the former chairman of the firm's corporate department in Washington, will transfer to the German office to head the corporate finance department. In London, Lathams represents a number of investment banks including Credit Suisse First Boston, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and UBS Warburg. German corporate finance deals are managed out of the London office with support from Hamburg, but the banks require Lathams to open offices in other European centres. Watson will join German managing partner Christoph von Teichman, who divides his time between Hamburg and Frankfurt. Von Teichman is an M&A lawyer, but while the Hamburg office continues to focus on M&A, Frankfurt will mirror the London office with a focus on finance.
