Latham & Watkins has turned to Barclays Capital for the latest hire into its New York capital markets team.
Guy Dempsey, who joins the firm in the role of counsel, will strengthen the firm's banking and derivatives capabilities. Dempsey previously served as Barclays Capital general counsel for the Americas, head of structured credit transaction management and chief operating officer.
Latham & Watkins managing partner David Gordon commented: "His experience in complex legal and compliance issues coupled with his strong background in derivatives, structured products, banking and capital markets transactions will be a great asset to our expanding derivatives practice."
A former London and New York White & Case lawyer, Dempsey took up his post at Latham last week.
Dempsey said: "The markets are at an interesting stage at the moment and I think we will be seeing a move toward bankruptcy and restructuring. However, the markets are cyclical and we will see the pendulum swing back and transactional work will become more prominent again."
