The London Borough of Lambeth has begun a panel review to service its new-look legal function.
Because the council has significantly increased the size of its legal team during the past year, from 40 to around 65 lawyers, the winning firms are likely to receive fewer instructions under the new contracts.
A council spokesman said: "We won't use them as often as we did before - we'll call them when we need them."
Head of legal Mark Hynes has invited firms to apply for spots servicing eight areas of law, to begin when existing contracts expire in March next year
The other seven parts of the panel feature Steeles Law for both property and litigation; Sternberg Reed for social services, SA Law for education, Judge & Priestly for debt recovery and Sharpe Pritchard for town planning.
All the current contracts expire in the new year and the new panel appointments will last for four years. Lambeth's last panel review was in 2004.
