K&L Gates and Chicago-based Bell Boyd & Lloyd confirmed the merger of the two firms following a partner vote today.
The combination of the two US firms will create a 1,900 lawyer firm with 31 offices in Asia, Europe and the US. It also provides K&L Gates with its first office in Chicago, the world’s fourth-largest legal market. The firm’s new Chicago office will have in excess of 200 lawyers.
K&L Gates chairman, Peter Kalis, said: “We are delighted and enthused that our partners have seen and supported the strategic value of this combination. We truly believe that the combined firm’s value proposition for clients will be unsurpassed in the profession.”
The full-service Bell Boyd & Lloyd has approximately 250 lawyers across its offices in Chicago, San Diego, and Washington, DC.
K&L Gates has been highly acquisitive in the domestic and international markets in recent years. In May last year, the firm confirmed a tie-up with Taiwanese firm J&J Attorneys at Law.
Earlier this month, The Lawyer reported a global revenue hike of 27per cent for K&L Gates, from $755.2m up to $959.4m for the last financial year. Profit per equity partner saw a 6.7 per cent increase from $800,100 to $853,900 (http://www.thelawyer.com/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=136402”>21 January 2009).
