Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis (K&L Gates) is to launch an office in Shanghai after being granted a license by the Chinese authorities.
The move boosts the firm's presence in the region, supporting the office in Beijing as well as those in Hong Kong and Taipei.
K&L Gates global managing partner Peter Kalis said: "Opening in Shanghai reflects the strong growth of the firm's China practice and strengthens our capabilities and reach in serving clients in China and the financial sector."
The office will focus on corporate, finance and regulatory work and will be headed up by corporate partner Vincent Tso, who has worked on M&A, capital markets transactions, private equity financings and direct investments in Greater China for more than a decade.
He will work alongside IP partner Howard Chen, of counsel Ivan Chiang and Chinese counsel Amigo Xie.
K&L Gates first applied for a licence in Shanghai in 2006 when Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham merged with Preston Gates & Ellis to create a 1,400-lawyer global firm.
