Jones Day is relocating three partners from its German network to open an office in Düsseldorf.
The office will be headed by Angsar Rempp, currently partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s Munich office. Remp was responsible for setting up the Munich office in 2003, some 12 years after the US firm first set up in Germany in financial capital Frankfurt.
Düsseldorf, widely seen as a key industrial centre in Germany, is increasingly attractive for a range of law firms. Last week (28 January 2012) German independent Graf von Westphalen set up an office in the city, while Mayer Brown chose to launch in Düsseldorf over its existing Berlin and Cologne offices last year (17 August 2011).
Rempp will initially be joined in Düsseldorf by Munich litigation partner Tom Mahlich and Frankfurt competition specialist Johannes Zöttl. Zöttl will lead the antitrust practice in Düsseldorf.
The office will focus on corporate law, M&A, private equity, antitrust, and patent litigation. Rempp and his fellow partners will also focus on growing Jones Day’s regional client base, particularly Japanese clients who often choose to headquarter their European offices in the city.
In a statement Rempp confirmed that the firm was in discussions with “a number of very promising lateral candidates in Düsseldorf” to grow the office.
Corporate finance partner Sandra Kamper will take over as Munich office head.
