Chicago and Paris partners relocate for Italian launch; local hires complete office; Rome next on list
Jones Day Reavis & Pogue has made an aggressive entry into the Italian market with a team hire from a leading boutique firm and the transfer of two of its own partners to Milan. David Rosso, a Jones Day partner from Chicago, and Peter Sternberg, a Jones Day partner who was previously based in Paris, will both relocate to Italy. The two partners have extensive experience representing US and European companies investing in Italy as well as Italian companies doing business in other jurisdictions. Rosso is part of Jones Day's government regulation group and focuses on energy, while Sternberg is a member of the business group and specialises in technology transactions. They will launch the Milan office with a team hired from M&A and project finance boutique Macchi di Cellere Gangemi. The team is led by Marco Lombardi, Stefano Macchi di Cellere and Ettore Scandale, who all join Jones Day as partners. They have taken four assistants with them to the new office. It is understood that Scandale was responsible for running Macchi di Cellere's Milan office, while Macchi di Cellere himself is the son of one of the firm's founders. Their practice has focused on M&A, capital markets, telecommunications and tax. Roberto Truffi of Studio dell'Avv Truffi in Milan has also been hired to help launch the greenfield office. He joins Jones Day as of counsel. The office will have a total of 20 lawyers when it opens this month. Rosso said: "We see great opportunities in the rapidly evolving Italian market.

The Milan launch gives Jones Day a total of 26 offices, including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, Brussels and Geneva. Plans for a Rome office are also underway. The Italian launch comes less than two years after the Madrid opening in January 2000, when Jones Day merged with local firm Tena Munoz y Asociados. In October it merged with specialist competition firm G&J Abogados. Jones Day managing partner Patrick McCartan said: "We're committed to maintaining our position as one of the leading global law firms with substantial capacity in all of the significant financial and business centres in the world. Therefore, it's important for us to have a strong team in Italy, one of the largest economies in the world."
