The firm, which advised publicist Max Clifford on the settled News of the World phone tapping allegations, has engaged agents to find it a base in the capital.

Managing partner Bill Jones told The Lawyer: “We’re dealing with more and more work in London. We act for high-profile clients that frankly don’t want to travel to Manchester.”

Jones said that the firm has “got a reputation in the really niche area of acting for celebrities that have had their phones tapped into. We’ve got that knowledge and expertise”.

JMW is also targeting London in order to be closer to City firms with which it hopes to develop referral relationships.

Joy Kingsley, the current senior partner at Pannone, who joins JMW as senior partner in September could be key to developing those networks.

At Pannone she was instrumental in striking up the referral relationship with Berwin Leighton Paisner to obtain referral work from the Thames Water outsourcing deal (7 June 2010).
