Bad lawyers, with the Legal Services Ombudsman to be given extra powers to investigate complaints against solicitors. The ombudsman would be given powers to set targets, cut delays and monitor whether lawyers were meeting targets.

Journalists. Every tabloid's favourite legal whipping boy, Anthony Julius, resigned as a trustee from the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Julius, the Mishcon De Reya golden boy who handled Di's divorce from Charles, was later embroiled in controversy over his firm's fees for work on her memorial fund. Now, in a bid to limit the damage, the fund is advertising for a public relations consultant to smooth the waters with a wage of more than u40,000 a year.
