Pickering will replace incumbent Howard Culley, who is expected to relinquish his role at the end of April next year.
Irwin Mitchell senior partner Michael Napier said: “In a large business, and law is no exception, continuity of strong management and leadership is crucial. John and I have worked closely for many years, as have the management team as a whole. This will continue, particularly at this challenging time in the legal services market.”
Pickering has headed up the personal injury division at Irwin Mitchell for the past 20 years.
He said: “These are challenging times but one of the great strengths of Irwin Mitchell is its ability to identify and maximise opportunities and I look forward to working closely with my partners to drive the firm forward in what is likely to be a period of sustained change.”
