Wedlake Bell lays off 17
Wedlake Bell has launched a redundancy consultation with six lawyers and 11 support staff.

The cuts have affected staff in the commercial property department as well as other practice areas across the firm. According to Wedlake Bell, the staff have received enhanced redundancy packages and outplacement services.

Philip Mathews, managing partner of Wedlake Bell, said: “As with nearly all other major commercial law firms we have had to review how the turbulence in the credit markets is impacting on our portfolio of services and the composition of our respective teams.”

He added: “It is obviously regrettable that we have had to make these redundancies and we will be looking to offer all the support that we can to departing colleagues.”

Wedlake Bell is the latest firm to cut staff, after redundancy consultations hit 43 at Ward Hadaway and 40 at Cobbetts last week.

As a CoL student, how can WB preach to us that they are a firm worth joining but will be laying off staff in their other departments. I think the phrase 'last in, first out' applies in this economic climate.

Only six lawyers? That doesn't sound like too much. Does anyone know which practice areas they come from?
