Italian independent Carnelutti is opening a Moscow office with the hire of two partners.
The office will be managed by Valery Podpaly, a Russian lawyer who joins Carnelutti from KMPG, where he was a senior manager in the accountancy firm’s legal and tax department. Podpaly previously managed the Moscow office of Swedish firm Bech-Bruun before it pulled out of the market in 2007.
Podpaly will work alongside Italian lawyer Vincenzo Trani, who most recently was CEO of investment fund Mikro Kapital.
The two partners will be supported by one of counsel and six associates, a mix of Italian and Russian lawyers.
The Carnelutti team will focus on corporate and M&A activity. Podpaly identified recent investments into Italy made by Severstal and Vimpelcom as examples of the growing activity of Russian corporates in the Italian market.
Moscow is Carnelutti’s second foreign office, adding to its presence in Paris. Other Italian firms operating in Russia include Pavia e Ansaldo, which has offices in Moscow and St Petersburg.
