Gay judges. The Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine is scrapping judicial selection rules requiring wannabe judges to declare their sexual orientation when applying for posts. Lord Irvine says he wants to ensure equal opportunities. But many lawyers think the only way to do that is to abandon the "secret soundings" system of appointing judges.
Geoff Hoon, former parliamentary secretary to the Lord Chancellor's Department, who finally hit the big time in the Cabinet reshuffle and made Defence Secretary. The ever-popular and now clean-shaven Hoon has cheerfully attributed his success to Gordon Brown's former press secretary Charlie Whelan, who advised Hoon to lose his moustache if he wanted promotion.
