News of the World investigations. Crown Court judge Timothy Pontius has freed two men convicted of dealing class A drugs after the jury accussed the tabloid of entrapment. The jury found the 10th Earl of Hardwicke and his business partner Stefan Thwaites guilty of supplying cocaine to the News of the World's "investigations editor", but made the unusual move of stating it had wanted to acquit. Defence counsel Alun Jones QC made an impassioned plea against the newspaper's tactics, which were also used to expose former Blue Peter presenter Richard Bacon and Home Secretary Jack Straw's son William.
Lord Irvine, who has come under fire from the internet industry for approving new European Union amendments to the Brussels Convention. The changes could force UK companies to comply with the consumer laws of all 15 EU states or risk an appearance in a foreign court.
