In the inimitable words of Primal Scream: Together, we’ve got power.
Quite how much Bobby Gillespie and his Scream-mates, even in the slightly more sober conditions you’re now likely to find them, understand about litigation case management is open to debate.
But Gillespie’s call to arms will resonate today for the claimants and their lawyers in the seemingly interminable News of the World phone-hacking saga after it emerged that one man will manage the nefarious claims against the Metropolitan Police relating to everyone’s favourite red-top scandal.
And that man is none other than Sir Geoffrey Vos (see story).
The knight of the realm will take charge of claims from such luminaries as Steve Coogan, Sienna Miller and gender diversity champion Andy Gray.
The Vos-man is no stranger to good causes – if that’s how his latest mission can be described. In 2007 he helped bring about the Neuberger Report into access to the bar before putting his weight behind the Milburn Report into social mobility in the law.
More recently, he became chair of mentoring charity the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF).
Such noble work saw Vos deservedly claim The Lawyer’s lifetime achievement award last year (see story).
Whether his latest starring role will be recognised as equally worthy of honours is unclear, but at the very least it’s a chance to build up his autograph collection.
The Lawyer’s sister title Lawyer 2B has teamed up with the College of Law to host a unique event for career changers and mature students. ’Not too Late for Law’ will be held on 19 April at the College of Law’s Moorgate Branch, where delegates will be able to gain an insight of how to break into the legal profession from some of the City’s top law firms.
