Slaughters ignores core practices as two gain partnership

Slaughter and May has made up just two new partners in the annual promotions round, half the number it promoted last year.

Unusually for the elite City firm, the corporate department did not receive any promotions. The new partners are David Ives in outsourcing, IP and technology and Michael Lane in tax.
Last year, Slaughters made up four associates across its competition, regulatory and corporate practices.

Slaughters invites relatively few associates to join the partnership every year, however promotions at the City firm have been falling for several years. In 2007, it made up five new partners, down from eight the previous year.

Addleshaw Goddard, Trowers & Hamlins and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have all announced promotions in recent weeks.

Addleshaws made up seven, down from nine last year (23 March), while Trowers increased the number of new partners to by 75 per cent to seven (24 March).

Freshfields saw a significant drop in promotions, with 14 associates making the grade compared to 25 last year. Just two of the new partners were based in the firm’s London office (23 March).
