SJ Berwin is in talks with Proskauer Rose over a potential merger, a source at the City firm has confirmed.
It is understood that a delegation from SJ Berwin met Proskauer in New York earlier this week to discuss details of the merger, although the source said that talks were “still in at the very early stages”.
The source added that the firm “has been approached by a number of firms in the last few months and has decided to pursue discussions with Proskauer.”
The news follow last week’s revelation that talks with another US suitor – Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe – had broken down.(4 May)
Proskauer, described by one former SJ Berwin partner as “the ideal fit” for the firm, has a number of partners formerly at fellow Boston firm Testa Hurwitz & Thibeault, with which SJ Berwin enjoyed a good relationship in the early 2000s.
